What is E-sys used for?

BMW E-Sys is an engineering version of the software for programming, coding, electronic control units of new series BMW, which is required interface like BMW ENET cable or ICOM A2 emulator.

What is coding?
Coding is for people who want to play with the settings of BMW car software to achieve something more desirable. Coding is not really a programming; it is another name for re-configuring the software of your car.

What is needed for BMW coding?

ENET cable

E-Sys software 3.28.1 + Psdzdata 3.61.6 (Newest)

/ E-Sys 3.23.4 + Psdzdata 4.94 (Safest – Recommend)

A laptop with Windows XP (preferred) or Win 7 with minimum 44 GB of free space

Software installer (optional), files attached

Backup utility for CAF files (optional), file attached

How to prepare your setup?
You can build your own cable or buy from a good source. Cable should be reliable as interruption of any kind during coding can be very risky.

Delete unwanted SW and data from your laptop. It may be worthwhile to de-fragment your HD of laptop before installing the coding software as this software will occupy almost 22 to 44 GB of space on HD. Use the power adapter to keep batteries charged all the time as installation will take several minutes depending upon the performance of the laptop and data storage media.

How to install E-sys 3.27.1/ 3.28.1?
You can use the manual procedure (attached) to install software on your laptop or follow automatic installation steps given below:

1- Create a folder on laptop or any external media and give any name such as BMWInstall. If you are creating folder BMWInstall on laptop, then you may need 44 GB of clear space as the installer will not move or delete any file from your laptop. If BMWInstall folder is on external media, you will need on 22 GB of clear space on laptop.

2- Copy folder psdzdata and E-Sys_3.27.1 into BMWInstall (Look at the BMWInstall folder image attached).

3- Also copy Setup_3.18.4-47.4.v1.bat and EDIABAS.INI files into the same folder.

4- Double click on Setup_3.18.4-47.4.v1.bat. It will install the complete software with correct settings to your laptop if the folders names are correct. Enter the password for E-Sys when asked. Installation time maypole take several minutes. Don’t interrupt the process, let it run and finish. You are good to go now.

What do you need to preparefor coding?

1- shut off any wireless or Bluetooth service on the laptop; just laptop and car talk to each other with no external interference.

2- disable any firewall on the laptop, better disable anti virus software.

3- better start with fully charged batteries of laptop and car as no interruption can be tolerated during transfer of data from laptop to Car.

How to setup the key to E-Sys?

1- Launch E-Sys by double clicking its shortcut on desktop. (a minute to start)

2- Select Options > Settings > EST

3- Click on the browse button with three dots ( …… ) and navigate to EST folder. If automatic installation was done, it should be at C:ESysDataEST

4- Select file “******.est” and click OK.

How to use ENET cable on BMW cars?

1- Connect ENET cable between car’s OBD port and network port of laptop.

2- Switch on the ignition of the car, don’t start the engine.

3- The laptop tries to connect to the car. Wait a few minutes until the network icon on laptop shows a Connection with the yellow exclamation point over it.

4- Launch “C:EDIABASHardwareENETZGW_SEARCH.exe” to verify cable and connection are working.

IP Address, MAC Address, & VIN will be displayed in a separate window. That shows that communication between car and laptop can be established with the used ENET cable. It may be useful to create a desktop shortcut for starting ZWG_SEARCH every time. It may not work under Windows 7, try running under Windows XP compatibility mode by right clicking on its exe file and selecting the correct mode.

What should you do if coding your car for the first time?
1- take a full back up of Car’s setting before any changes are made to the car. This would help reverting back to original settings in case a mistake is made or it is desired to go back to original settings of any or all features.

2- Connect ENET cable between car’s OBD port and network port of laptop.

3- Switch on the ignition of the car, don’t start the engine.

4- Laptop tries to connect to the car. Wait a few minutes until the network icon on laptop shows a Connection with the yellow exclamation point over it.

5- Press connect button on top row of E-Sys to connect car with the laptop.

6- Laptop opens up a popup, select the correct TargetSelector, e.g . F025 and not F025_DIRECT, select “connection via VIN” and press Connect.

7- Click Ok when connection established.

8- Select “Expert Mode” on the left pane and click on “Coding” button.

9- In Vehicle Order Box (upper left), click on “Read” button., it would display FA of your car.

10- Go to SVT Actual Box (right pane, midway down) and click on “Read(VCM)” button.

11- SVT box will display SVT of different modules of your car, some with green bullets. These green CAFD files are of our interest.

12- Right click on each green CAFD and click on “Read Coding data”. Afre codes are read, green icon will change into a folder icon.

13- Read all the green CAFD files one by on or,select multiple by holding the Ctrl key of keyboard and read Coding data by right clicking..

14- Check the folder “C:ESysDataCAF”, this will contain all the read CAFD files.

15- Copy and Save all the files in a safe place. These are your original CAFD files.

16- Use utility “Copy_CAF_v2.bat” , copy it anywhere on your laptop and double click on it to automatically save the files under a Folder “C:My_CAF_Files ” with date and time stamp.

How to perform CAFD files coding?

1- Follow 1 to 9 steps of above topic.

2- Expand the folder of any read CAFD of a module that you would like to edit with the changes as shown on the cheat file.

3- Right click on the CAFD file and click “Edit FDL”. Enter the pin if asked.

4- Open the module you wanted to edit, click on the Functionen folder, ausgelessen folder of the selected function will show the current settings.

5- Change them as per Cheat Sheet and Save.

6- To be on the safer side, edit only one module at a time.

7- After making all changes in the module as per the cheet sheet for that function, save and go back by pressing top extreme left green arrow “back” button.

8- Now you can see FA again. Right click on it and “Activate FA”. You will see a green active text next to FA. Also FP will open on the right side.

9- Select the edited CAFD file on SVT box and Click on “Code FDL” in coding box on right.

Coding process will start and should end with no errors.

10- Take a backup of all the CAFD files again and save in a different folder. Best way is to use “Copy_CAF_v2.bat”. Copy it any where on your laptop and just double click on it, all will be done for you and files will be saved under a new date time stamped folder.

11- Great, you coded one module. Disconnect E-Sys program by clicking on top Connect button which is showing a red x. You are done.

Test the car for the changed feature. Some features require 15 -30 minutes to get activated where as some are instant and few need you to switch off the and lock the car and unlock and start.

* NOTE: If upgrading from a previous E-Sys version, first uninstall current E-Sys version via Windows Control Panel.

06) If existing “psdzdata” folder exists in “C:Data” (i.e. “C:Datapsdzdata”) DELETE it.

07) From the PSdZData_Lite or PSdZData_Full extraction, copy the “psdzdata” folder to “C:Data” (i.e. “C:Datapsdzdata”)

* NOTE: If upgrading from a previous PSdZData version, DELETE old PSdZData folder and REPLACE with new PSdZData folder (DO NOT copy

(merge) new PSdZData folder on on top of old PSdZData folder).

* NOTE: PSdZData Lite Version has all ECU Firmware files removed, which are needed only for flashing new firmware onto ECU’s and which ARE

NOT needed at all for any Coding. PSdZData Full Version is needed ONLY for Programming (flashing) ECU’s with new Firmware.

* NOTE: BMW AG made changes to PSdZData beginning with 54.2 PSdZData where they removed (trimmed) all descriptive text from CAFD (and

FAFP) files, making FDL Coding of ECU’s difficult, as the FDL Codes can no longer be easily located. E-Sys Launcher Premium 2.x uses historical

CAFD data from older Untrimmed PSdZData releases to dynamically map the trimmed data back into E-Sys.

08) Run the “ESysLauncherPremiumSetup_2.0_Build_xx.msi” to install program to default location (“C:Program Files (x86)TokenMasterE-Sys

Launcher PremiumESysLauncher.exe”)

09) Run “E-Sys Launcher Premium” from Desktop Shortcut.

10) In “Path” field, press the “” Button, and Select folder location to store Token file Path (i.e. “C:Data”).

11) In “PIN” field, enter any alphanumeric 4-12 character PIN to use with your Token file (e.g. “1234”).

12) In “Confirm” field, enter the same alphanumeric 4-12 character PIN previously entered (e.g. “1234”).

13) Press the “Generate Token” button, and wait for the “EST Software Token Successfully created at “C:DataFreeToken.est” message to appear,

and then press the “OK” button.

14) When the main E-Sys Launcher Premium window appears, press the “Abort” button at bottom of it.

15) Select the “Car Series” Dropdown box and choose your exact chassis type (e.g. F01, F06, F07, F10, F12, F15, F25, F30, F82, F83, etc.).

*NOTE: With E-Sys Launcher Premium version, once “Car Series” is set, it can only be changed every 3 days, so be sure to set it correctly during

initial installation and setup. If you do not want this restriction, you can obatain E-Sys Launcher Pro version from TokenMaster, which lacks this

16) After “Car Series” is properly set, press the “Launch Now!” button.

*NOTE: It will take E-Sys a while to open as it writes its the log file.

17) On E-Sys Menu Bar, select “Options” and then “Settings”:

  1. A) On the “PROGRAM” Tab, set the Directories => Data: path to “C:Data”
  2. B) On the “EST” Tab, set the Developer-Soft-Token => EST: path to match .est Token file created in Step 12) above (i.e. “C: Data

FreeToken.est” )

  1. C) On the “OPTIONS” Tab Uncheck the boxes for “Update VCM after TAL execution” and “Update MSM after TAL execution”.

18) Press “OK” to close the Settings Diaglog Window and then from the Menu Bar press “File” and then “Exit” to shut down E-Sys application.

19) Make connection from car’s OBDII port to computer LAN port with OBDII-ENET interface cable.

20) Ensure Car has adequate power and is switched on.

*NOTE: A continuous power source of at least 12.6 Volts is needed. Failure to maintain proper voltage can lead to corruption of ECU Data. As

such, ideally the car is connected to an external charger. In lieu of using an external charger, the car can instead be coded with the engine running

in order to maintain proper voltage, which is acceptable for coding all ECU’s EXCEPT the DME (Digital Motor Electronics) ECU or DDE (Digital Diesel

Electronics) ECU. The DME/DDE are typically not coded anyway, so this ECU limitation is generally not an issue.

21) Wait a few minutes until the Laptop Windows wired network adapter icon shows a Connection with the yellow exclamation point over it.

*NOTE: The car does NOT have a DHCP server, so it does NOT assign an IP Address to the computer. Both the computer and the car will go into

DHCP fallback mode, each assigning themselves a random Class-B IP Address so that they can talk to each other. This can take up to 60 seconds,

so you have to wait until the PC has an IP address before you try to connect). Class-B IP Address range is from 128.0.0.0 to 191.255.255.255.

Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) is a network client-side process used as a fall-back position when DHCP services are not available on the

network but the client devices are configured to use DHCP for their IP address configuration. APIPA allows the client device to randomly choose one

of the 65,534 addresses available in the Class B network address of 169.254.0.0/16.

*NOTE: If you are running E-Sys in a Virtual Machine (VM), make sure you set the VM NIC to bridging mode. Do NOT use NAT.

22) Run “E-Sys Launcher Premium” from Desktop Shortcut to open E-Sys application.

23) On E-Sys Toolbar Press the “Connect” Button and in the “Open Connection” window under “Target”, select desired Target Vehicle based on

car’s Chassis.

(e.g. “TargetSelector:Project=F010-xx-xx-xxx, VehicleInfo=F010”)

*NOTE: Do NOT select the Target with the “_DIRECT” suffix (e.g. TargetSelector:Project=F010-xx-xx-xxx, VehicleInfo=F010_DIRECT).

*NOTE: If the “Open Connection” window under “Target” is empty (no targets), verify the following:

  1. A) That the psdzdata chassis folders each have an empty “dist” folder (See Step 05).
  2. B) That the “psdzdata” folder is installed properly (See Step 07).
  3. C) That the “Directories => Data: path is set properly (See Step 17A).

24) In the “Open Connection” window under “Interface” select “Connection via VIN”.

*NOTE: If “Connection via VIN” is grayed out and Vehicle VIN is not shown verify the following:

  1. A) ENET Cable connection to car is good.
  2. B) Car has proper voltage (Make sure Charger voltage is at least 12.6 Volts or motor is running if car is not on a Charger).
  3. C) Laptop Windows Firewall and any Antivirus software is disabled and not running.
  4. D) Laptop Lan Adapter has a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address (Make sure it is using DHCP and does not have a Static IP address assigned to it).

If “Connection via VIN” remains grayed out, close E-Sys and shut car completely off for 30 minutes, and try connection again beginning with Step19.

25) In the “Open Connection” window under “vehicle-specific parameter (optional)” select “Series, I-Step Shipment”, and leave the two

Dropdown boxes blank.

*NOTE: Do NOT select “Read parameters from VCM”.

26) In the “Open Connection”, select “Connect” button.

*NOTE: Window should pop up confirming successful connection and car can now be accessed with E-Sys.

  1. A) Each time E-Sys is launched, the first time the FDL Editor or CAF-Viewer is invoked, either directly via “Editors & Viewers => FDL-Editor” or

“Editors & Viewers => CAF-Viewer” or indirectly via right-clicking on a module’s read CAFD and selecting “Edit FDL”, you will need to enter the EST

Token PIN.

  1. B) Coding KOMBI (Instrument Cluster) module will cause the car to chime and the dashboard to reset including the clock. Simply reset the vehicle

Date and Time via iDrive when done coding module.

  1. C) Coding some ECU’s can result in a variety of initial Error Messages appearing on CID Screen. This is common. Just click on “Ok” to dismiss

them, and they should NOT reappear again. If errors persist, try and clear them with E-Sys as follows:

⦁ Click “External Applications” in the left menu.

⦁ Click “External Application”

⦁ Double-click “Transmitter”

⦁ Scroll to the bottom and click “… Clear all DTCs (clear DTC,clear Infospeicher,ZFS – DM_Lock,clear ZFS – DM_Clear,ZFS – DM_Unlock) to

highlight it.

⦁ Click “Connect” button.

⦁ Click the “Send” button.

  1. D) Some ECU’s take a long time before the changes begin working (e.g. trunk and mirror close). If still not working after a full hour of car being

shut off, try recoding the module again, even if it looks like the correct parameter (e.g.”nicht_aktiv”) is set.

  1. E) If you want to read an ECU CAFD’s last as-coded settings (i.e. net coding data), go to the “Editors & Viewers => FDL-Editor”, put your PIN in,

and then navigate to your CAF folder (C:DataCAF) and select the desired CAFD file’s corresponding read coding data .ncd file. You do NOT needto be connected to the car.

(e.g. Module CAFD Name cafd_000000f9.caf.007_003_167 = CAFD_000000F9_007_003_067.ncd)

  1. F) If you want to look at an unread CAFD file, go to the “Editors & Viewers => CAF-Viewer”, put your PIN in, and then navigate to your CAFD folder

(C:Datapsdzdataswecafd) and select the desired CAFD. You DO NOT need to be connected to the car.

(e.g. Module CAFD Name cafd_000000f9.caf.007_003_167)

G:) For known Coding Parameters, search for Coding Cheat Sheet for your chassis (e.g. F10, F30, F20, F15, etc.)
